It's all about the cycle...
The cycle of drug abuse has been proven time and time again in numerous studies in several different ways. The cycle of substance abuse works very closely with the cycle of violence, but the cycle of substance abuse will is the main focus point. When a mother prenatally abuses substances, their future child will be at risk for exhibiting behavioral problems later in their childhood. This will surely cause the child to be more difficult and cause the parents to be harsher with them. This may cause them to abuse substances themselves and engage in risky behaviors e.g., risky sex at an early age. These behaviors and circumstances are predictors for early pregnancy. Now these teens are more likely to abuse substances while they are pregnant and thus, the cycle continues.
It is important to eliminate prenatal substance abuse to stop the cycle of abuse. Children being born to mothers who have prenatally abused substances are more likely to be at a disadvantage compared to children who were born to mothers who did not prenatally abuse. Because prenatal substance abuse is also attributed to violence, this causes a strain on society, for example: more strain on schools to deal with difficult children, children introduced to the criminal justice system, and welfare monies issued form society.
