What is Prenatal Substance Abuse?
Prenatal substance abuse is the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs by a pregnant mother.
The misconception that illegal drugs such as marijuana and cocaine have a greater negative effect than alocohol and tobacco on a growing fetus needs to be eliminated. Studies do show that in fact, alcohol and tobacco have greater negative effects than other illicit drugs.
Prenatal substance abuse is more likely to occur in younger women usually in the teens to the lower twenties. This is why the aim of this website is to inform young women as to what can be done to prevent pregnancy and harmful behaviors that can hurt the child while pregnant, as well as, focusing on the root causes so that young women may understand why such behaviors occur.
